Funny that my 50 mile time is faster than my 50K.  Guess that's what happens when your only 50K has over 11,000' of vertical ascent =)

I started running in April '09 and run to maintain some balance in my life.  Apparently I have an addictive personality so I figure I should do something positive with it.

Gonna keep it short and sweet here.  The full race report can be found on my personal blog here: http://ohtheaftermath.blogspot.com/2011/06/2011-squaw-peak-50.html

Had a pretty good race considering my training over the last month has been pretty weak. Consensus was that the course was a bit more difficult this year, and I think the times reflected that.  I was reeling people in one by one for the first 45 miles.  Most of this was due to the fact that I went off course very early on and had to play catch up all day.  Then the last 5 miles my race completely fell apart when I got disoriented and dehydrated.  Glad it happened near the end so I didn't have to fight it all day though!

Overall I'm pretty satisfied with my result and I had a great time out there!  Great to see some FRB'ers as well.  Congrats to all who finished.

Everything about the new course made it appear that it would be easier, but everyone has been saying it felt harder. Interesting.

That race really goes to show that your base fitness is solid. Those last 5 miles aren't an indication of anything other than the difficulty of the conditions. While your training hasn't been heavy, it was certainly enough for you to perform well. Congrats. That gives me confidence for Laramie in a few weeks.

Nice work man! I was wondering how everybody was doing all day, especially in the heat! Way to stick with it. You pulled off a solid time! Can't wait to hear about it.

It gives me confidence for watching Jun run Laramie. Ha :)

Dude, congrats on your race. It sounds like you were really strong out there even though it was hot as hell. I can't wait to read the full report.

You looked great both times I saw you, running strong. I am sure the heat got to you those last 5 miles--amazing you held it off that long. People were dropping like crazy at mile 30, we needed a medic!

Congrats on a solid race. You are an incredible runner, very fun to watch! I see BIG things in your future.

OH, and EVERYONE we spoke to said the race was indeed much harder. EVERYONE.

Thanks for all the kind words guys!

There's definitely something to be said for base mileage. While I may have lost a bit of fitness over the last month, I probably made up for it with really well-rested legs.

And no doubt it was the heat that killed me at the end. My legs were ready to run hard. I left the final aid station with 30 ounces of water and it was gone within 2 miles. Can't imagine what some of the runners further back had to go through with all the heat.

I thought that was you I saw leaving Hope. Nice job out there! Those last miles were blazing hell.

By the way the new course had much more climb the the standard, almost 13,000 according to Phil, and was longer by a bit over a mile. They were supposed to move the turn around up canyon further but didn't for some reason, again, according to Phil the master of crunching course numbers.

Good to know the numbers agree with what everyone was feeling out there. I know it was hot, but the course certainly felt more difficult overall.

Also, finally posted a proper race report.
